We had cats for many years too Fiona and the neighbours certainly do – one even sleeps on the tables – but I put the tables up high and the feeders are well positioned away from reach, so it doesn’t seem to deter the birds.

Have you heard of Beth Chatto? She’s based in Essex and has a garden split into zones for different scenarios – one of them is for shady areas – I think she’s got lists on her website of the plants that will thrive in certain scenarios (or there’s a booklet you can buy).
